State Minister of Prisons Management and Prisoners' Rehabilitation Lohan Ratwatte today stated that given the present congestion in prison due to the rising numbers of inmates, the government intends to reduce the number at least by 8000 before the end of this year.
At present, he stated that 28,915 inmates are jailed in the 28 prisons across the island.
