A/L, Scholarship exams: Final decision depends on polls date

08 Jun 2020

By Sarah Hannan The Ministry of Education is to make a final call on whether to postpone the Advanced Level (A/L) and Grade Five Scholarship examinations scheduled to take place in August after a decision is made on the date of the impending parliamentary election. Speaking to The Morning, Secretary to the Ministry of Education N.H.M. Chithrananda stated that based on the Election Commission’s (EC) decision today (8) on declaring the date of holding the election, the Ministry will consult the Department of Examinations on postponing the A/L examination. “We will be able to conduct the Grade Five Scholarship examination in August even with election as it only takes one day. However, a decision will need to be taken regarding conducting the A/L examination as the timetable is designed to span a two-week time period,” Chithrananda noted. Schools too are yet to recommence work following the closure in March due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The Ministry has indicated that schools would possibly commence in July. However, an exact date for recommencement too is yet to be announced.
