Abolishing Executive Presidency not our duty anymore: SLFP

26 Sep 2019

Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) Spokesperson Weerakumara Dissanayake said the SLFP will not take the responsibility of abolishing the Executive Presidency as many attempts to do so had proved futile. Dissanayake was speaking at a press conference in Colombo today(26). "President Maithripala Sirisena has tried many times to abolish the executive presidency but has failed in the current government. Since many attempts in the past and the present have failed, we remove our selves from the duty of abolishing the Executive Presidency," Dissanayake said. He further said the impromptu proposal to abolish the Executive Presidency by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe  at the special cabinet meeting last week was was unethical and untimely. "This proposal could have been brought 2 to 3 months ago, but why now?" Dissanayake questioned. Speaking on the forthcoming elections, he said the SLFP Central Committee meeting will take place on 30 September to address issues related to the election. Dissanayake said plans to form an alliance with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) were still underway. "We hope to bring SLFP and SLPP together. We hope we could solve party concerns and differences through further discussions," He said. However, he said, if discussions failed with the SLPP, the party was ready to face the forthcoming election on its own.
