Adverse weather conditions: Rapid response units on standby

09 Jun 2020

Although there were strong winds and fairly heavy rains over the past two days, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) had not recorded any damage to property or displacements. Speaking to The Morning, DMC Deputy Director and Spokesperson Pradeep Kodippili said that the strong winds had only uprooted trees and obstructed the Kegalle-Mawanella road on Sunday (7) evening, which had then been cleared immediately. “There was an incident where an electrical post had fallen on a vehicle, and damaged the vehicle. That was considered an accident. In addition to that, our rapid response teams stationed in potentially risky areas are prepared with the necessary gear to respond to any emergency situation. These days due to the strong winds in the sea areas, we have requested the fishing communities to be vigilant as well.” Kodippili also stated that thunderstorms can occur quite frequently, coupled with the rains, and therefore. the public should also take necessary precautions to minimise lightning-related accidents.
