Appeal Court rejects petition filed for arrest of Karuna Amman

21 Jul 2020

The Appeal Court has rejected a petition requesting the court to  issue a directive to the Acting IGP to arrest Leader of the Tamil United Freedom Front (TUFF) Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman over the controversial statement he made on 19th June. The FR petition was filed by Kaduwela Municipal Council member and tuition class teacher Boseth Kalahepathirana. Respondents in the petition include the AG Dappula De Livera, the Acting IGP C.D. Wickramaratne  and former deputy minister Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan. Karuna Amman addressing a public meeting on 19th June stated that he was more dangerous than the Covid-19 virus as he had killed nearly 2,000-3,000 military personnel during the war. Karuna’s statement drew criticism from many parties who claimed that he was trying to glorify the killing of Sri Lankan soldiers during his time as a LTTE militant.
