While vehemently condemning the alleged attack on a law student by a group of police officers of the Peliyagoda Police, the Colombo Law Society requested the Attorney General to direct the police to immediately produce the perpetrators in Court.
In a statement, Colombo Law Society’s President Vijaya Gamage and Secretary Sanath Karunaratne yesterday said that no citizen should be subjected to police brutality and any such act should not be tolerated by any means and should be heavily refuted.
They further said the Colombo Law Society is deeply shocked and is highly concerned about the incident, and urged the IGP to take stern action against the perpetrators irrespective of their status or rank in the Police Department.
“The Colombo Law Society, as the largest branch association of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, will stand against the said act or any similar acts which hinder the professional rights of Attorneys-at-Law or any act which hinders the individual freedom of citizens or any act which undermine the
Rule of Law,” it said.
