CID probe on HSG-tested women

01 Sep 2019

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is to record statements from women who secretly underwent hysterosalpingography (HSG) tests at the Kurunegala Hospital after Dr. Mohamed Shafi was taken into custody over allegations that he performed non-consensual sterilisations on women while delivering their babies through C-section procedures, The Sunday Morning learnt. The CID recently informed the Kurunegala Magistrate that they had conclusive evidence to prove that the Director of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital Dr. Weera Bandara had made attempts to conduct the HSG test behind closed doors after stating in court that performing such tests can be harmful to the mothers undergoing them. The B report filed by the CID stated that investigations had revealed that the Deputy Director of the hospital Dr. K.M.C. Kendagamuwa, with the blessings and knowledge of the Director, had made arrangements to conduct HSG tests on seven selected mothers who had complained about Dr. Shafi on 3 June 2019. A senior official of the Police Department told The Sunday Morning that the CID investigators would also examine the bed head tickets (BHT) of the women, who had undergone the test. The official claimed there was suspicion over why tests were carried out on selected women while they had earlier objected to the tests to see if the said doctor had sterilised mothers forcefully or not. When the case was taken up on 27 June 2019, the CID sought a directive from the court to put the mothers through the HSG test but lawyers appearing on behalf of the mothers complained that it was not safe. The court then proceeded to seek the advice of the Hospital Director who was present in court at that time, and he made lengthy submissions as to why these mothers should not undergo the HSG test. He claimed that it can result in very dangerous complications such as cancer in the reproductive system and even death. Based on these submissions, the court halted the tests and called for reports from an expert panel on the said complications.
