Consumers overcharged: CEB rectifies mistake

13 May 2020

 Pay Feb bill amount for March, April Electricity consumers from certain areas have alleged that they have been overcharged despite assurance given by Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera that they would only be paying for the units used during the past two months. Last month, Minister Amaraweera assured electricity consumers that they would not be charged any additional amounts, considering the difficulties they faced due to the Covid-19 situation. However, consumers alleged that they have been overcharged with the inclusion of additional unit charges, due to the combining of the March and April bills. When contacted by The Morning, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Chairman Eng. Vijitha Herath noted that it was an error made by the meter readers, and it would be rectified in the next bill. Consumers were requested to pay the same amount in their February bill towards their March and April bills. “Meter readers combined the two months’ bills together and that is where the issue occurred,” he added. – Maheesha Mudugamuwa
