COVID vaccine cannot be bought by private sector yet: Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama

08 Feb 2021

Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama, Senior Consultant Physician at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), today stated that the private sector cannot separately buy the COVID vaccine as of yet. “We have received many requests from conglomerates for permission to separately purchase the COVID vaccine to provide to their employees. However, that cannot be done as of yet because the COVAX facility as well as other vaccine manufacturers have a priority list due to the large demand,” he said. It was further stated that 8 million vaccines would be provided by the COVAX facility to the government to be provided for four million citizens. “There is a demand for 18 million more doses of the anti-COVID vaccines to cover the entire population, after the COVAX vaccine is provided. As the supply is limited and the demand is high, the WHO has not yet allowed private business owners to separately purchase the vaccine,” Dr. Wijewickrama stated at a press conference held today.
