Sri Lanka Customs Port Control Unit detained an illegal consignment of Beedi leaves today.
The 2 x 40 containers said to be yarn shipped from Chennai, India to Sri Lanka were found to be beedi wrapper leaves worth Rs. 122 million.
This consignment has been consigned to a company registered under the Board of investments (BOI ) situation in the Katunayake Export Processing Zone.
The tax payable for the consignment is more than 100 million, Sri Lanka Customs said.
One suspect has been taken into custody by the Sri Lanka Customs and further investigations are carried out.
