Dialog offers Rs. 1,000 cashback for settling bills

19 May 2020

By Madhusha Thavapalakumar Dialog Axiata PLC has announced that it is reimbursing up to Rs. 1,000 for every bill paid by its customers, in a bid to encourage them to settle large outstanding bills. Sri Lanka’s leading mobile service provider on 15 May announced that for the first reload or bill payment made through their app, customers would get a payback of 100% up to Rs. 1,000. The announcement came last week following the easing of curfew restrictions as unpaid voice and data bills accumulated during the curfew period. This move is aimed at encouraging customers to settle their long-outstanding bills. However, we learnt that Mobitel, the second largest player in the market, has not announced any such plans, as waiving Rs. 1,000 from each bill would be too high a cost for the company to bear, The Morning Business learnt. According to a directive by their regulator, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), the service providers adopted a no-disconnection policy even if customers exceeded their credit limits, irrespective of the outstanding amounts. This has resulted in service providers accumulating a mountain of unpaid voice and data bills. According to telecommunication service providers, data usage has been substantially higher than surges in voice calls or messages during this period, and Dialog's data usage alone increased by 30% during the curfew period, it is learnt. Speaking to The Morning Business a week ago, an official from Dialog said that the company is concerned over possible defaulting of high-value bills. Nevertheless, the company noted they would resort to a number of options and easy-payments plans to encourage people to pay their bills, once the country returns to normalcy. The recent offer is one of these, and it is valid until 14 June 2020. To avail the offer, customers are required to make a reload or bill payment after saving or verifying their debit or credit card details on the MyDialog App. This offer is applicable only for the first payment or reload that is made after saving the card details. The payments could be made for any Dialog mobile connections, DTV, and home broadband connections, and there is no minimum amount required for payments. Dialog Axiata is a listed company and a subsidiary of the Malaysian Axiata Group. For the year ended 31 December 2019, the company’s profit stood as Rs. 11.5 billion compared to Rs. 4.3 billion a year prior. As at end-2018, Dialog had a market share of over 44% and a 13.8 million mobile subscriber base.
