EC to decide this week

01 Sep 2019

The Election Commission of Sri Lanka (EC) said it would decide on a date to hold the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election when the commission meets this week. Director General of Elections Saman Rathnayake told The Sunday Morning that the election would have to be held within five to seven weeks of the conclusion of accepting nominations. The Supreme Court had last week ordered the NEC to hold the election after accepting the rejected nominations list of the Democratic United National Front (DUNF). The Supreme Court delivered the order with regard to a petition filed by the Secretary of the DUNF against rejecting its nominations for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha at the local government elections. “In this case, if we take the date on which the Supreme Court decision had been made as the day of nominations, five to seven weeks after that day, the election will be held, which means it is very likely that the election will be held in early October,” Rathnayake explained. The nomination papers handed over by the DUNF were rejected because they had been handed over by a person who was not the authorised agent.
