Erased mailing addresses of 45,000 packages: Postal Department resolves issue

22 Jun 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara  The Department of Posts would resort to using the barcodes on the 45,000-odd packages of which the mailing addresses were erased. Union of Post and Telecommunication Officers General Secretary and Postal Service Superintendent H.K. Kariyawasam said that the barcode option was the best available remedy for the situation. “Most of the barcodes are still visible so they can be used to refer to the sending countries and get details of the recipients,” Kariyawasam said.  He said the parcels or letters that had no barcode would have to be returned.  “If the barcode is also not visible, then we will have no choice but to return them and the customers can be reimbursed,” he said. Kariyawasam said that the extended storage period during quarantine had erased the addresses of 45,000-odd packages of online orders. “The ink used to print the addresses on packages usually lasts about a month. As a result of the online orders being held up due to Covid-19 restrictions, the ink had worn off naturally,” Kariyawasam said.
