The Department of Meteorology announced that the Western, Eastern, North Western, Sabaragamuwa, North
Central, and Southern Provinces along with the Mannar, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, and Monaragala Districts will
experience extreme weather conditions.
The heat index of the aforementioned region is expected to be at extreme caution level.
It also states that dehydration may lead to muscle spasms and excessive heat strain, resulting in stroke.
Therefore, people who work in open workspaces should drink water adequately and rest as much as possible under
the shade.
Children should not be left unattended outdoors for prolonged periods, and if possible, it is advised to
limit outdoor activities as much as possible. Furthermore, wearing white or light-coloured clothing is advised.
Meanwhile, a red alert has been issued for strong lightning activities over the North Western, Sabaragamuwa,
Central, Southern, Western, and Uva Provinces and in the Mannar District.
Similarly, the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, and Mullaitivu Districts are also at risk of lightning.
The public is urged to follow precautions to minimise lightning-related accidents.
