28 Nov 2020

State Minister Duminda Dissanayake said that his ministry is expecting to install floating solar panels in the Diyawanna Lake to generate power for the Parliament. Speaking in Parliament, State Minister of Solar Power, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Projects Development, Duminda Dissanayake said Parliament’s architecture prevents them from fixing solar panels on its roof. “However, we hope to set up floating solar panels in the Diyawanna Lake to generate power for the Parliament. Today, a large amount of public funds are being spent to cover the electricity bill of the parliament,” he said. He said selected state institutions would be given loan facilities to install solar panels on their rooftop to generate power and add it to the national grid. “The government’s objective is to generate 70% of national power supply from renewable sources by 2030,” the State Minister said. Meanwhile, he said they have made arrangements to add 500 MW to the national grid from solar power by setting up panels on houses of 100,000 low income families. “The 100,000 families will be selected from among the Samurdhi recipients. They will be given loan facilities to set up solar panels and then the CEB will purchase electricity from them. The families will receive an income by generating renewable energy,” he said.
