GMOA threatens TU action in failure to fulfil demands

14 Sep 2020

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has issued a Trade Union (TU) notice for all-island TU action, which is to be initiated during the week, starting from 21 September, to protest against the undue delay in fulfilling several demands made by the Association, including the regularising of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC). In a letter written to Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi on Friday (11), GMOA Secretary Dr. Senal Fernando stressed that the TU action would be launched against the undue delay in getting final approval in Parliament for the minimum standard of medical education, not conducting elections for four vacant posts of the SLMC, ending the continuing presence of appointments of former Minister of Health Dr. Rajitha Senaratne within the SLMC, the continuation of irregular inquiries with malicious intentions against GMOA officials which were initiated during the period of Dr. Senaratne, and the delay in approval for the Grade MO (medical officer) retirement age extension amended by the cabinet paper. It is further requested that the Ministry takes prompt action against the above-mentioned demands prior to the proposed TU action. The GMOA has also stressed that it believes that an early appointment to discuss these urgent matters will be essential to prevent an unnecessary service breakdown within the entire health sector of the country.
