The Government says a leadership battle has begun within the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the joint opposition protest staged in Colombo was a result of that battle.
State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene told reporters that the protest was a damp squib.
He said there was a lot of expectations with regards to the protest yet in the end it failed to meet those expectations.
Wijewardena also said that the protest was not really against the Government but was part of a leadership battle in the SLPP.
"In the event people were given to drink and a lot was spent on buses to bring the public to Colombo but nothing came out of it. There was nothing for the public to gain nor was the Government toppled," he said.
The State Minister said that the public were however inconvenienced as they stayed home fearing road blocks from a massive crowd when in reality the crowd turned out to be less than expected.Government says leadership battle has begun within SLPP
