Govt. considers ‘next-door’ exam centres: Only 48% of O/L students attended school

27 Jan 2021

Only 48% of students who are facing the upcoming General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE O/L) examination have attended school in the Western Province after schools reopened on 25 January, according to the Ministry of Education. However, Ministry of Education Secretary Prof. Kapila Perera told The Morning yesterday (26) that he was “really happy” with the attendance considering the Covid-19 situation. “I’m really happy about the number of schoolchildren who turned up on 25 January in the Western Province. The school attendance percentage was 48%.” He added that the Education Ministry is also looking at having “next-door” examination centres for the GCE O/L exam considering the risk factor. These centres will be close in proximity to the students when compared to school examination centres and therefore, the students would not have to travel to the exam centre by bus. However, according to Ceylon Teachers’ Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin, the percentage of students facing the upcoming GCE O/L examination who attended school in the Western Province after schools reopened, was 40%. Attendance is decreasing in both the Western Province and all over the country due to the declining confidence parents have in the Government, he further alleged.
