Hiruni Wijayaratne set a new Sri Lanka record on Sunday (16), not here in Sri Lanka but at the 18th annual Music City Distance Carnival (MCDC) in Nashville, Tennessee, US.
The 5,000 m runner had won gold in last year’s South Asian Games in Nepal.
Wijayaratne Sunday morning ran a personal best of 16:17.51 seconds to finish 15th. Hannah Everson of the US won first place with a meet record of 15:31.97 seconds.
Hiruni’s previous best was 16:41.58 set in June 2019, also in the US.
