MT New Diamond tanker ordered to tow away from Lankan waters

11 Sep 2020

The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) decided to inform the owners of the MT New Diamond, which was engulfed in fire last week, to tow the vessel away from the Sri Lankan maritime boundary without delay. The owners were to be informed of this in writing yesterday (10) as per the directives of the Attorney General (AG), stated MEPA Chairperson Attorney-at-Law Dharshani Lahandapura. She called on the AG on Wednesday (9) to seek legal advice pertaining to the measures that could be taken with regard to the ill-fated oil tanker. The Sri Lanka Navy observed a narrow diesel-like oil patch in the sea close to the ship both on Tuesday (8) and Wednesday, and measures were subsequently taken to destroy the oil patch using chemicals. Divers were later deployed to inspect the relevant fuel stains and it was revealed that the oil patch was the accumulation of some of the fuel that was used for the ship. Furthermore, AG’s Co-ordinating Officer State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said MEPA Chairperson Lahandapura was instructed to issue the necessary directives to the salvors of the ship, to take urgent measures to stop the oil leak into Sri Lankan waters. In the meantime, Navy Spokesperson Captain Indika de Silva stated an investigation was expected to be carried out into the oil leak using a joint divers unit.
