President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) was not ready to form an alliance with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) under the ‘flower bud’ (Pohottuwa) symbol.
Sirisena who was speaking at an event in Kurunegala yesterday, said Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and SLPP Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa met him on Saturday(28) to discuss matters regarding the forthcoming election.
Sirisena said, he had stressed at the meeting that SLFP was not in agreement to contest under the ‘flower bud’ and instead had proposed that a common symbol be used.
He said, the SLFP was prepared to back SLPP Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the election but not at the expense of destroying the SLFP.
