16 Feb 2021

By Hiranyada Dewasiri and Dinitha Rathnayake    There are no plans within the Police system to segregate officers on the basis of gender, according to Police Media Spokesperson Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana. He was responding to a query made by The Morning in light of the petition filed by senior police officers against the appointment of Bimshani Jasingharachchi as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of welfare.  Speaking to The Morning yesterday (15), DIG Rohana said that there are no plans within the Police to bring about segregation based on gender.  “There are no plans to segregate based on gender in the Police.” A group of senior police officers, including former Police Media Spokesman Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekara, have filed a petition against the appointment of DIG Jasingharachchi, who is the first woman to hold this position in the Police.  The case is to be heard at the Supreme Court today (16). Meanwhile, the National Police Commission (NPC), when contacted in this regard, said that the NPC under its new membership has had nothing to do with Jasingharachchi’s appointment.
