Norochcholai breakdown: No power cuts

14 Jun 2020

The second silo of the Norochcholai power plant will be repaired by this Tuesday (16), without the need for any power cuts in the interim, The Sunday Morning learnt. Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Chairman Vijitha Herath, speaking to The Sunday Morning, said that it would take a week to fix and restart the second unit of the Norochcholai power plant. “Engineers first have to wait till it cools down before any repairs can be attempted. Thereafter, it takes time for the plant to be heated back up to the required temperature. The whole process will take about a week,” he said. Moreover, he added that there were no issues of power cuts as there was enough power supply due to lowered demand as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown measures. Furthermore, he assured that there would be no power cuts till the end of the year at least. “Several new power plants are to be commissioned. Uma Oya will be commissioned at the end of the year, which will provide 120 MW, and the wind farm in Mannar, which will give 100 MW, will be commissioned in August,” he said. By Skandha Gunasekara
