Office on Missing Persons concerned over govt. move to amend Act

15 Jan 2020

The Office on Missing Persons(OMP) has raised concerns over the government's move to amend the OMP Act No 14 of 2016. OMP said recent media reports have claimed that the government plans to review the OMP Act with the view of amending it. "The OMP was created in recognition of long standing demands of the families of the missing and disappeared and with a view to addressing the recommendations as well as the failings of past state mechanisms that sought to address issues related to missing and disappeared," OMP said in a statement today. "Sri Lanka had suffered from wide spread disappearances for over four decades in multiple contexts including the civil war and the southern insurrections." The OMP urged the new government to bring about relevant amendments in consultation with families of the missing and disappeared, organisations that work with them and the OMP.
