Pettah Floating Market: Renovations commence today

  • UDA to spend close to Rs. 10 million 
By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The renovation work of the Pettah Floating Market will commence today (24) by the Urban Development Authority (UDA). UDA Director General N.P.K. Ranaweera told The Morning that the UDA will make an estimate for the total cost of the renovation work today but the authority was planning to limit the cost under Rs. 10 million. On the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the renovation of the Pettah Floating Market is scheduled to commence at 8.30 a.m. today under the patronage of Urban Development and Housing Ministry Secretary Sirinimal Perera. According to the shop owners, more than 80% of the shops in the Pettah Floating Market have remained closed for the past four-and-a-half years due to improper maintenance. Considering the current situation of the Floating Market, the President and the Prime Minister instructed the UDA to expedite the renovation. The Floating Market was opened in August 2014 as a concept initiated by the then Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. In addition, the UDA also plans to review all leisure projects that come under the purview of the authority.
