28 Sep 2020

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha today (28) stated that government funds should be allocated to provide financial assistance to all underdeveloped temples throughout the country in the future, in order to prevent government funding from being limited to developed temples. The Prime Minister gave these instructions in view of the fact that millions of rupees have been provided to developed temples through the recent government financial assistance programs and no funds have been allocated for the development of rural temples. The Prime Minister made this observation at a discussion with the monks of the Dodamgaslanda electorate of the Sri Lanka National Bhikku Front regarding the acceleration of development activities in the Dodamgaslanda electorate in the Kurunegala District. The discussion was held at the Prime Minister's official residence in Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo. The Prime Minister paid special attention to a number of issues in the Dodamgaslanda electorate. Prof. Kapila Gunawardena, Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, was instructed to designate the Nelligala Rajamaha Viharaya as a sacred area and to develop temples. The Prime Minister instructed the Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi to pay attention to the problems at the Dodamgaslanda Ayurveda Hospital and requested the Governor of the North Western Province, Raja Kollure, to look into other matters, including the construction of a public toilet system which was a major shortcoming in the town of Dodamgaslanda.
