A system upgrade is required to implement the point system on driving licenses and therefore, the implementation of the system would require additional time, Police Media Spokesman SSP Jaliya Senaratne told The Sunday Morning.
“We need to establish a proper method on how the demerits would be awarded from each police precinct. Therefore, an update is needed in this regard to implement the point system for driving licenses,” he said.
He added that this was the only issue preventing its implementation.
“Technically, it has been approved for implementation for several years now, but the lack of an updated demerit award programme is causing a delay. It cannot be implemented overnight.”
The point system on licenses would ensure better road safety and minimise accidents by shaving points off an individual’s license for each road infraction.
