Neither the National Police Commission (NPC) nor the Police Department believe that the integrity of the Police Force should be tarnished as a result of a handful of incidents.
Police Spokesman SP Jaliya Senaratne told The Morning that the Police had acted accordingly during the protest on Tuesday (9).
Despite video footage of the incident depicting police brutality, the Police asserted that no excessive force was used.
“The Police didn’t use excessive force. They acted accordingly in response to those resisting arrest.”
Meanwhile, the NPC pointed out that a few incidents should not be viewed as representative of the country’s entire Police Force.
“Just because of a few errant officers and a few incidents, we cannot say that the entire Police Force is heading in the wrong direction,” NPC Secretary Nishantha Weerasinghe said.
While acknowledging that two separate investigations were being carried out into police conduct, the Commission stated they could not comment on the behaviour of the entire Police Department.
“We have not received any complaints. Only police internal investigations have been initiated and we are yet to receive the reports. Therefore, I cannot comment on the conduct of the Police,” he said.
