Probe on leopard death

05 Jan 2020

A carcass of a leopard had been discovered near the canal connecting to Mau Ara Tank at the 14th milepost outside the Udawalawe National Park on Wednesday (1). Udawalawe National Park Warden R.G.R.S. Ranatunga said that when the wildlife officers had found the carcass they had noticed the dead leopard’s front paws and several teeth had been removed. “We handed the carcass over to the Veterinary Department of the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home to conduct a postmortem examination immediately.” Department of Wildlife Conservation Director General Chandana Sooriyabandara, speaking to The Sunday Morning, stated: “These leopards are allowed to freely roam and is not fenced off inside the national park. We suspect that the incident would have occurred when the leopard wandered off to hunt outside the park premises. We have now launched a full investigation with the participation of the Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Sri Lanka Police to bring the perpetrators to book.” – Sarah Hannan
