Removal of war monument at Jaffna Uni.; UGC Chairman says peace monuments needed

09 Jan 2021

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunga said the removal of war monument at the Jaffna University was timely and that the country needed peace monuments instead of war monuments. Clarifying on the incident, the Professor said the monument had been expanded over the years and that it could act as an obstacle in the peace process. He said the Jaffna University's Vice Chancellor Professor Sri Satgunarajah was one of the best scientists in the country as well as a shrewd administrator. “He is one of the best Vice Chancellors of recent times. He has made a decision to remove the monument because it doesn’t suit for present times. The students now in the university were at the ages of 9, 10 or 11 when the war ended. Today, about 1,500 Sinhalese students study at the Jaffna University and at least 600 to 700 Tamil students in all other universities. What's noteworthy is that there are no conflicts among these students. “We are fortunate as a country and as a nation that these students have not created any conflict at any university. The Vice Chancellor has taken a decision to remove the monument from the Jaffna University last night. I think it is a timely decision. We need peace monuments instead of war monuments,”
