Renovation of Gaffoor Building into a luxury hotel

11 Sep 2020

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The Urban Development Authority (UDA) is to reconstruct and renovate the Gaffoor Building, a prominent four-storey, wedge-shaped building located in Colombo Fort, to transform it into a luxury hotel, State Minister for Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal, and Public Sanitation Dr. Nalaka Godahewa said. He told The Morning that renovation work of the project had already been commenced and the project would be completed in another one-and-a-half years. “The original plan started when the current President was the Defence Secretary. They had started the renovation work and then everything came to a halt with the change of government in 2015. The project was delayed for the last five years and we have recommenced it,” he added. The project would be similar to the Dutch Hospital project and would be completely handled by the UDA, he added. The building was completed in 1915. At the time of completion, the owner of the building was Abdul Gaffoor, a jewellery and gemstone trader. Gaffoor used to sell gems and jewellery to cruise ship passengers visiting the island.
