Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa is yet to accept the post of leader of the new UNP led alliance, a senior UNPer told The Sunday Morning.
Accordingly, Premadasa will be appointed Leader of the UNP led alliance, once he informs the Working Committee(WC) on the 6th of February.
"Until then Premadasa cannot make any decisions on behalf of the alliance nor hold discussions representing the UNP regarding the alliance," the senior UNP member said.
Following the WC meeting held on the 30 of January, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that the WC had decided to appoint Premadasa as the leader of the new alliance.
However, he said that Ranil Wickremesinghe will continue as Leader of the UNP.
Kariyawasam further added that the new WC had decided to appoint Premadasa as Prime Ministerial candidate as well.
He said Premadasa will also lead the election campaign for the forthcoming parliamentary election.
