Silent demonstration by group of priests outside Borella cemetery against mandatory cremations

17 Dec 2020

A group of Anglican, Catholic and Methodist priests tied white clothes outside the crematorium at the Borella Cemetery against the mandatory cremations of COVID-19 victims. Human rights activist Ruki Fernando said the priests tied white clothes outside the crematorium, where a 20 days old child was cremated against the wishes of the parents, to stop forced cremations in Sri Lanka. “The primary duty of Christians are to be in solidarity and support those oppressed and suffering, and oppose injustice. That's the reason we went today morning, to fulfill our Christian duty,” he said. He highlighted that some Christians oppose forced cremations as medical experts including Professor Malik Perera have said there was no health risk through burials of COVID victims. Professor Peiris has said that viruses replicate only on living cells and that transmission from a dead body is extremely unlikely. “No reason to believe in the case of COVID-19 that a dead body is a major source of transmission,” Professor Peiris said.
