Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment gather census of Sri Lankan migrant workers

18 Sep 2020

By Sarah Hannan Over the past two months, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) opened up a registration platform to gather statistics on Sri Lankans working in foreign countries. Given that the pandemic is still very much in effect, and understanding the necessity of having a database that captures all migrant workers’ data in one system, the SLBFE launched the Census of Sri Lankan Migrant Workers form online, which can be accessed on: http://services.slbfe.lk:9095/. The Morning contacted SLBFE General Manager W.M.V. Wansekara to inquire about the ongoing census. Responding, Wansekara said: “The SLBFE only has the statistics and details of persons that register at the Bureau and go abroad. As such, when the repatriation process commenced to bring back the migrant workers to Sri Lanka or we looked at sending them the necessary relief as required, we struggled.” Wansekara believes that this database will help them provide a better service to all migrant workers regardless of whether they are registered with the Bureau or not. Therefore, any Sri Lankan working in a foreign country is able to register via this platform, so that when assistance is required, the SLBFE can conveniently co-ordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Relations and conduct welfare operations or services.
