Sri Lankan housemaid's death in Kuwait: SLBFE to carry out separate probe

14 Sep 2020

By Sarah Hannan The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) is to conduct a separate investigation over the death of a Sri Lankan migrant worker in Kuwait. “We are conducting a separate investigation with the assistance of the embassy, as the full report from the post-mortem is pending. Furthermore, should the allegations get confirmed, we will file legal action against the sponsor for recompense,” SLBFE General Manager W.M.V. Wanasekara told The Morning. The SLBFE is expecting a report over the suspected death caused by alleged torture by evening today (14). In an unfortunate turn of events last week, a death of a Sri Lankan migrant worker was reported from Kuwait. Following the incident, the Kuwaiti law enforcement authorities commenced an investigation over the migrant worker’s sponsor and his wife. Kuwait local media reported that the Sri Lankan migrant worker was a female, 46 years of age, and had been admitted to the Amiri Hospital by her sponsor in Kuwait and was in a critical state. The medical examination had stated that the victim had traces of burn marks, cuts, and wounds on her body. Due to her critical state, the hospital authorities had immediately transferred her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where after a few hours she succumbed to her injuries and died at the hospital. The deceased’s corpse has been referred to the Forensics Department of the hospital for a post-mortem examination and for the issuance of a full report on the injuries that were visible on the deceased’s body. During the initial investigations the sponsor had denied any involvement of subjecting their deceased housemaid to torture or violence.
