The main Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), stated that it has no involvement in the discussion of Opposition political parties reportedly chaired by former Parliamentarian Prof. G.L. Peiris.
It was reported that a special meeting of Opposition parties was to be held yesterday (14) under the chairpersonship of Prof. Peiris.
When queried by The Daily Morning as to whether the SJB would take part, SJB General Secretary and MP Ranjith Maddumabandara said that they would not. “The SJB has no involvement in that discussion,” he said.
According to political sources, the meeting was aimed at building unity among Opposition parties. A similar discussion took place last week at Prof. Peiris’s residence, and yesterday’s meeting was planned as a continuation of that. Opposition representatives had however told the media that the initiative is not intended to form an alliance to directly challenge the Government, but rather to enhance cooperation among the parties.
