Subhani Hassimdeen (77), former Captain and Head Coach of the Sri Lanka National Football team passed away on Saturday (25) leaving a legendary legacy behind. He was also a renowned sports writer. Starting to play the game at Zahira College Colombo who are no strangers to football, starting at the tender age of 14, Subhani went onto play for some of the golden clubs of yore, namely Eleven Youngsters, Black Square, and Victory FC. He later coached top class clubs– Ratnam, Red Stars, Java Lane, Maligawatte Youth, Sri Lanka Army, Colombo FC and many more. He served as coach at St. Peter’s College , STC Prep, and Prince of Wales.
He was instrumental in winning Ceylon’s maiden football trophy in 1968 as runners-up in the Agha Khan Gold Cup tourney.
