  • Police commence separate inquiry into alleged verbal abuse by lawyer

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya yesterday stressed that the Police officer who was recently arrested for allegedly assaulting a lawyer at the Mount Lavinia Court premises would be provided with legal representation, and that assistance would be sought from the Attorney General and a State Counsel in this regard.

The IGP made this statement while speaking to the media yesterday (12) with regard to the reports that lawyers had refused to represent the Police officer in question. With regard to the status of ongoing investigations, the IGP said: The Police Special Investigation Unit has been tasked with probing whether the Police acted in a proper manner or whether there were shortcomings. In addition, an impartial investigation is in progress.”

Meanwhile, Ada Derana reported that the Additional Magistrate of Mount Lavinia had ordered further investigations using CCTV footage from within the court premises.

It was further reported that the Police have launched a separate investigation into the allegation that a senior lawyer, who accompanied the allegedly assaulted attorney, verbally abused and threatened the Police officer involved in the incident. Videos of the lawyer demanding immediate action to interdict the Police officer in question went viral on social media.

The case is scheduled to be taken up again today (13).
