60-year retirement applicable to docs, nurses, engineers

16 Sep 2022

  • Exemptions for top posts like consultants on a case-by-case basis
  • Pension applications sought from 20,000-25,000
BY Dinitha Rathnayake    The Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government said that the decision to lower the mandatory age of retirement to 60 years would apply to all sectors, including medicine, nursing, and engineering. Speaking to The Morning, Ministry Secretary M.M.P.K. Mayadunne said that while the decision would apply to all sectors, those holding certain positions, such as consultants, could get a different provision but at a personal level, on a case-by-case basis. Meanwhile, after the circular was published reducing the age of compulsory retirement of public officers up to 60 years, Government employees have been requested to promptly apply for their pensions. According to Mayadunne, the total number of annual pensioners of 18,000 would increase up to 20,000-25,000 due to the interim Budget, as those in the public service who are 60 years and older would be sent on mandatory retirement by the end of 2022. The interim Budget by President Ranil Wickremesinghe proposed to reduce the retirement age of public sector and semi-Governmental employees to 60 years. Earlier, the Government decided to raise the mandatory retirement age of public sector employees to 65 years, and that of semi-Governmental employees to 62 years. Those employed beyond 60 years of age at present in the Government and semi-Government sectors will be retired as of 31 December 2022.
