9 new businesses in islandwide harbours

By Dinitha Rathnayake A total of nine agreements have been reached to commence new businesses in fishery harbours following a call for applications for the same made by the Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation last March. Following the advertisement taken out in this regard, out of the 591 proposals submitted, agreements were reached yesterday (30 September) for nine selected businesses. Accordingly, a new canned fish factory, a new shipyard for local and foreign markets, four new ice production yards, a new cold storage facility, a solar power project, and two small business premises providing essential goods facilities will be constructed in the vicinity of fishing harbours. The majority of these projects are investment projects exceeding Rs. 100 million. About 400 direct jobs will be created. The agreements were signed under the patronage of Ornamental Fish, Inland Fish and Prawn Farming, Fishery Harbour Development, Multi Day Fishing Activities, and Fish Exports State Minister Kanchana Wijesekera. Wijesekera said in a tweet that a total of 591 applications were forwarded to the advertisement on expressions of interest for 22 fishery harbours and that over 150 had been shortlisted. Once the evaluation process of the remaining business and investments applications are concluded, they will also be entered into agreements with, the tweet further noted.
