Alawwa PS Chair’s work hindered by fellow SLPPers

12 Jan 2022

  • Party members reject her appointment; burn papers, sing songs instead
BY Pamodi Waravita Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Member and Alawwa Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) Chairperson Padma Weththewa said yesterday (12) that the SLPP is aware of the recent behaviour of certain SLPP Alawwa PS members, and that despite these challenges, she is committed to being responsible towards her duties.  Weththewa was appointed as the PS Chairperson, three months ago, following the demise of the former Chairperson. However, news reports on Tuesday (11) show fellow SLPP PS members behaving violently and refusing to accept her leadership, claiming that the party had not consulted them prior to her appointment.  “I am responsible towards the people. I was appointed as the Chairperson three months ago and during those three months, we came up with a plan on how to proceed with the PS’s activities. I do not know why these PS members are protesting my appointment. I have always worked in a just manner,” Weththewa told The Morning yesterday.  News reports show Weththewa leaving her official chair on Tuesday, postponing the PS session, as the members protesting her appointment were seen burning papers and singing songs.  A gazette issued by Public Services, Provincial Councils, and Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, exercising the powers vested in him under the Municipal Councils (MCs) Ordinance, the Urban Councils (UCs) Ordinance, and the PSs Act, issued a gazette notification on Monday (10), extending the tenures of MCs, UCs, and PSs until 19 March 2023. Thus, the term of each councillor of all 24 MCs and 41 UCs, and each member of all 275 PSs has been extended until 19 March 2023. Following the publication of the gazette, the Opposition’s Samagi Jana Balawegeya and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna demanded to know the reason for this extension.
