‘Aragalayites’ to ignore diaspora link allegations

18 Aug 2022

BY Dinitha Rathnayake The activists who are involved in “aragalaya” (struggle) protest will not respond to any rumours alleging that they have links with the country’s diaspora, said a lawyer for the activists, Manoj Nanayakkara. Speaking to The Morning, he said that many social media posts are being shared related to diaspora links involving the key figures of the “aragalaya”. “I don't think that the activists have to respond to rumours, as this is also a part of the Government's plan to destroy the public faith in the ‘aragalaya’. We achieved a lot. We were able to chase away former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who had Executive powers. What more you could ask for?” However, according to Nanayakkara, the “aragalaya” is restructuring itself, as its victory is not yet achieved without a system change, Constitutional amendments, and legal and election reforms. “Every day, we are strengthening and rebuilding ourselves in order to achieve our next targets,” he said. Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had summoned active protestor Shehan Malaka on Tuesday (16) to reportedly record a statement in connection with the incidents of protestors storming the Prime Minister’s Office in Colombo, and President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence in Fifth Lane, Colombo 3. According to his lawyers, the statement was recorded regarding the protestors storming the Premier’s Office and Wickremesinghe's personal residence, while he was also asked to identify a few persons as well. He was also called to the CID earlier, with regard to comments made to the media on the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. Malaka had been outspoken over the investigations into the Easter attacks, claiming that it was a political conspiracy, and had called on the Government to investigate the incidents.
