Army to administer AZ 2nd dose at Viharamahadevi Park tomorrow

31 Jul 2021

Starting from tomorrow, the Sri Lanka Army will begin vaccinating members of the public with the second dose of the AstraZeneca anti Covid-19 vaccine, The Morning learns. While speaking to The Morning, Army Commander and Head of National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) General Shavendra Silva reassured that he has requested for adequate stocks of the vaccine for this purpose from the consignment which is to arrive this evening. “We are expecting to start off tomorrow, there are some formalities which have to be fulfilled through the Ministry of Health before this,” he said. General Silva also noted that people need not rush to the Viharamahadevi park tomorrow, as the Army will be vaccinating people throughout the entire day. The public has been requested to arrive at the site with a form of identification and the relevant vaccination card which indicates that they have obtained the first dose of the same. Further, from Monday (02), the Army will operate another centre for this purpose at Diyatha Uyana, along with the centre at Viharamahadevi Park. When queried as to whether the public can expect travel restrictions or lockdowns in the near future given the current situation, the Commander explained that this is not likely. “At the moment we have removed all isolation orders island wide. We are not hoping to impose lockdowns or travel restrictions,” he told The Morning. Meanwhile, Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath stated that MOH offices and Colombo Municipal Council will begin rolling out 2nd doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from Monday (02). “Vaccines will be administered at a large number of places. The people are requested to contact their nearest MOH office for more information,” he told The Morning.
