Sri Lanka to negotiate US trade tariffs

03 Apr 2025 | BY Staff Writer

Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Anil Jayantha Fernando stated Sri Lanka will hold talks to negotiate the new 44% trade tariffs imposed by the United States (US) before 9 April.

Accordingly, he clarified the Government had prior knowledge of the situation but awaited the official US policy decision before taking action.

Sri Lanka aims to secure a possible tariff reduction, citing its ongoing recovery under the IMF program and economic stabilization efforts.

The minister warned of potential negative impacts on textile and food exports but assured that alternative options, such as seeking benefits through the GSP+ tariff system, are available if negotiations fail.
