The State Trading (General) Corporation (STC) announced that there is no immediate need to proceed with the planned importation of eggs from India, as local producers have significantly reduced their prices following the Government's earlier decision to import eggs.
Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (19), STC Chairperson Asiri Walisundara confirmed that the decision to import approximately 30 million eggs from India has been temporarily halted.
“The importation of eggs from India was a measure to address the sharp rise in local egg prices. However, due to the recent reduction in prices by local producers, we have paused the plan,” Walisundara explained.
Earlier this month, the Government had considered importing eggs to combat the surge in prices driven by domestic producers. However, he noted that the prospect of importing eggs had a positive impact on stabilising the market.
“The decision to import eggs proved to be an effective method in controlling the price hikes initiated by domestic producers. Currently, there is no need to import eggs, as the local market prices have stabilised at a satisfactory level,” he added.
As local poultry producers had failed to reduce the exorbitant prices of eggs despite having been notified, the Government granted permission earlier last year (2023) to import eggs from India which was later extended until April of this year, in a bid to control the unreasonable increase in egg prices in the local market.
