Nayomi Amarasinghe became Sri Lanka's first female seafarer after completing an International Labour Organisation (ILO) training course.
Initially aspiring to be a journalist, she struggled to find work and tried various jobs before discovering seafaring. Despite family objections and industry scepticism, Amarasinghe completed her training at the Mahapola Ports and Maritime Academy, overcoming gender barriers.
With her newfound skills, she's worked with Carnival Cruise Line, travelled the world, and gained practical experience.
Her goal is to become an officer and eventually a sea captain, breaking down gender barriers in a male-dominated field.
