Significant hike in electricity use

  • CEB engineers request careful use of electric appliances

The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Association (CEBEA) urged the public to use electricity carefully since the daily electricity consumption has increased significantly due to the existing dry weather conditions.

Speaking to the media yesterday (13), the Media Spokesperson of the CEBEA Nandika Pathirage said that there will be no power cuts these days despite these issues, but that the people must not waste electricity and must instead be cautious when using electric appliances. He further noted that Sri Lanka is still covering the majority of its electricity requirements through thermoelectric sources instead of other renewable energy sources. He also said that the significant surge in the country’s daily electricity consumption would create a slight pressure on electricity generation, but that it would not result in any power cuts. The CEBEA also stated that the surge in electricity consumption has been caused by the excessive use of air conditioners (ACs), electric fans, and refrigerators due to the prevailing high temperature. However, he noted that the water level of the reservoirs is still at a good level to avoid possible power cuts. “There is an unwanted fear among people that they will have to experience power cuts again in the midst of this hot temperature. But, we have enough water in reservoirs, around 70%, to generate hydroelectric electricity, even though there is a dry weather condition. But, we have to urge people not to waste electricity, to be mindful when using electric appliances, and not to forget to switch them off once they are finished using those appliances,” he said.
