  • Youth organisers lobbying Opposition political parties, ‘GoHomeGota’ protestors to present proposal to Govt. today; massive Colombo protest on 9 July
Social media activists Dilan Senanayake and Anuruddha Bandara arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (4), after the duo was summoned to record a statement in connection with a complaint lodged by Iraj Weeraratne. Speaking to The Morning, Senanayake said that he was questioned for more than three hours related to a complaint made by a pro-Government social media activist. It was reported that the complaint was made by Weeraratne. Speaking to the media, Bandara said that summoning them will not intimidate social media activists. He said that summoning them in such a manner is a misuse of the law, adding that they are unafraid of such intimidation. Bandara said that the freedom of expression cannot be curtailed, adding that the law will stand in support of people who express dissent. Bandara, a youth activist who was recently arrested in connection with a protest and was subsequently released, said in a Tweet that organisers are “trying their best” to get Opposition Parties, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and others onboard. He urged the public to express dissent in order to overthrow this Government. Meanwhile, social media activists and unions involved in the “GoHomeGota” struggle are to present a proposal to the Government today (5) at 2 p.m. More than 50 organisations would participate in the occasion. A massive and peaceful people’s protest is planned for 9 July in Colombo, demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his Government as the country goes through its worst fuel crisis on record. Social media chatter on the protest indicates that citizens from around the country have been advised to congregate in Colombo in what the organisers claim will be the “greatest uprising in the history of Sri Lanka”.
