Neither my father or I have anything to do with this Prophet Jerome or his church, says Dr Sachithra Weerasekera, son of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Sarath Weerasekera.
He said this while speaking to The Morning today (31) when questioned whether he had 'helped' Prophet Jerome Fernando in compiling Fernando's security team.
"I don't even know who he is. I have heard about him, but that's about it. My father doesn't know him either and we have no affiliation with him or his church. People can say whatever they want but I am a medical doctor by profession and I will never use my father's political position or my influence for personal favours," he said.
The Morning learnt that several members of the Glorious Church have accused Prophet Jerome Fernando of being closely connected with politicians and have been using their political influence to evade accusations posed against him.
Fernando was accused of having personal security who were ex- military or police, who were introduced and recommended by the MPs son Dr Sachithra Weerasekera.
Further accusations were of Fernando evading a Sri Lanka Cricket Board and CID inquiry when Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe formed a five member committee led by retired Supreme Court Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena to investigate incidents that took place during the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia in November 2022.
Attempts to contact Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe on the matter proved futile.
Jerome Fernando hit local media when his 'spiritual father' Uebert Angel was exposed by Al Jazeera's Investigative Unit (iUnit) recently for money laundering and gold smuggling.
Foreign media have reported that Uebert Angel, or Prophet Major Uebert Angel, as he refers to himself, has been stripped off all diplomatic positions within the Zimbabwean government.
