- To oppose any Parliament proposal on same
The ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Party has declared that they will not only oppose any potential proposal in the Parliament to postpone the upcoming Presidential Election, but also lead efforts to defeat any such attempts.
The United National Party (led by President Ranil Wickremesinghe and is also part of the Government) General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara recently said that both the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections should be postponed by at least two years, and that a related proposal should be tabled in the Parliament, with a referendum called only if necessary. He argued that the current President has made significant progress in resolving the country's economic issues, and that therefore, holding an election at this time would jeopardise those achievements.
The SLPP expressed opposition to postponing any election following Range Bandara's remarks, but did not clarify whether they would support a related proposal in the Parliament or not. When questioned about their stance on such a proposal, SLPP General Secretary and Government Parliamentarian Sagara Kariyawasam told The Daily Morning that the SLPP would not support any move to postpone elections. "We will not support any proposal to postpone elections or any related move. Furthermore, we are prepared to lead efforts to defeat any attempt to postpone elections, whether it be the Presidential Election or the Parliamentary Election."
The incumbent Government is made up of the SLPP and the UNP, the latter which has only one MP.
